Occupied a controversial role. However even his genuinely revolutionary buildings in the early years of the 1900's displayed the imprint of his early training. During the first twenty years of his career he executed a series of buildings and projects in highly traditional, not to say fashionable manner and later attempted to conceal or deny authorship.
Has been called 'the antithesis of the Ringstrasse', 'the father of modern Viennese architecture', 'the educator of an entire generation'. His buildings of the early 20th century are the first examples of modern architecture in Vienna. Quote from Bahr p. 90-1.
